Recently, actress Wu Xin mentioned on a show that she hasn't looked at WeChat Moments for seven or eight years, saying it frees her from social exhaustion and restores inner peace.

For many, it is an active "social fasting" — a lifestyle choice to escape comparison anxiety and focus on self-management.

Many parents of autistic children also adopt the attitude of "neither posting nor viewing" Moments.

"Seeing other parents show off their kids in Moments, I think of my son... the more I scroll, the more it hurts."

同是“断舍离”,前者是做人生减法,以求轻盈;

Both are forms of "decluttering" — the former seeks lightness by subtracting from life;

the latter puts on armor to bear the heavy weight.

Do You Still Scroll Through Moments?

WeChat Moments launched in April 2012.

Back then, posts were simple and direct, lacking elaborate layouts — an era of sharing with authentic life flavors, where likes and comments were plain interactions among acquaintances.

Over a decade later, Moments have changed — ads and promotions are interspersed, carefully arranged nine-grid photos and polished captions make it more like a stage for an "ideal life".

Thus, more and more people choose to step back: stop looking at Moments!

Actress Wu Xin once mentioned that her decision to close Moments started on a night when she finished work at 2 a.m.

She scrolled frantically, but the feed seemed endless.

More exhausting was that liking became a matter of social calculus: if I like this one, will the others I skip mind?

She suddenly realized that this silent social fatigue was quietly draining her.

From that day, she deliberately chose "not to view", which gradually became a habit.

The result: the world became quieter.

More importantly, the passive comparisons and anxieties — such as seeing peers join a hit show while she wasn't on the list — faded away.

"Display" and "Disconnect" of Moments

Her feelings resonate with countless people.

But for many families with children who have special needs, "closing" Moments often carries a deeper weight.

"Since my child was diagnosed with ASD, the world seems divided into 'me' and 'them'," says one mother.

Late at night, after her child falls asleep, she picks up her phone, opens Moments, and sees friends' kids winning speech contests, running in the sun, saying innocent and witty things... She smiles, yet tiny thorns still prick her heart.

So she stopped looking.

Not looking, to avoid pain.

Typical "kid-showing" scenes in Moments often inadvertently touch the most vulnerable spots in neurodiverse families.

It's not envy, but deep fear of uncertainty about their own child's future when seeing typical developmental trajectories.

Avoidance, to breathe.

This active social distancing creates a space free from judgment, where they can breathe freely amidst the pervasive "battlefield of comparison".

Of course, some families face the daily burden of care.

The child requires constant supervision; emotional and behavioral issues may arise at any moment. Daily care, therapy, and educational support drain all their energy.

For them, even a moment of quiet rest is a luxury, let alone browsing Moments.

Neither View Nor Post   or   View but Don't Post   or   Post but Don't View

Wu Xin chose a complete farewell: no browsing, no showcasing.

She frankly tells new friends when adding them, to avoid unnecessary speculation.

Yet, in this world, people's attitudes toward the window of Moments are far from just one type of closing.

有人选择“只看不发”,做一个寂静的观者,在无声的浏览中获取信息;

Some choose "view only, no posting", being a silent observer, gathering information without a sound;

也有人“只发不看”,将这里视为单向的记录仪或树洞,倾诉而后不问回响;

Others "post but don't view", treating it as a one-way recorder or a hollow to pour out thoughts without expecting echoes;

And of course, many still casually browse and occasionally post, maintaining a light connection.

As long as it doesn't lead to internal conflict, every choice has its own logic.

Some neurodiverse parents, after adjusting their mindset post-diagnosis, turn Moments into a gentle "science window", openly explaining the world of autism, trying to build a bridge of understanding over the gap with great courage.

Yet some parents, when faced with overly curious questions, unintentional comparisons, or well-meaning sympathy, quickly feel the exhaustion of being gazed at.

Thus, they set their Moments to "visible only to self", preserving the audio of their child's first "Mama", the photo of the first time putting on shoes — victories that may be trivial in mainstream standards but earth-shattering within the family.

Other parents skillfully use the "visible to certain groups" feature, cautiously balancing between "island" and "bridge".

This is similar to young people hiding Moments from their parents: not alienation, but protecting psychological boundaries, avoiding concerns that require lengthy explanations or unconscious judgments.

Find Your Own Comfortable Rhythm

The trade-offs of online socializing must ultimately land in the fabric of real life.

When holidays like Spring Festival come, greetings and invitations from relatives often bring a mix of joy and hesitation for many neurodiverse families — a desire for connection, yet a need to face potential unusual gazes, unintentional comparisons, or pressure from excessive concern.

At such times, actively finding and establishing your own "comfortable rhythm" is far more important and practical than forcing yourself into a social script set by others.

First, communicate in advance and set friendly boundaries.

Second, be well-prepared and reserve safe space.

Finally, shift the focus and define your family's own 'completeness'.

Ultimately, whether online silence or offline caution, the core of these choices by neurodiverse families is not retreat, but actively guarding the necessary peace for what they cherish most — growth — in a noisy and monotonously paced world.
